Funding and Costs

The Skills Bootcamp funding comes from national government and is devolved to local authorities. In this case, Lincolnshire County Council oversees the allocation of funds.

The funding covers training that would not normally be supported, such as the HGV licence, which usually costs around £4,500. For learners applying independently, the programme is completely free. If an employer sends an employee onto the course, the company contributes a small fee depending on its size, either 30% for large employer or 30% for small,

This well-funded programme removes the biggest barrier to entering the HGV industry – the high cost of training – and makes opportunities more accessible.

Addressing the Driver Shortage

There is a national shortage of HGV drivers, particularly within transport and logistics, which is a key sector in Greater Lincolnshire and the wider agri-food industry. With an ageing workforce, there is an urgent need to attract new drivers.

The Skills Bootcamp project helps meet this demand by encouraging both younger participants and older drivers looking to re-enter the industry. By removing financial obstacles, the scheme opens the door to a broader range of candidates, making a real impact on filling skills gaps.

Course Content

The training includes three elements: a theory-based classroom component, practical driver training, and support in preparing for employment.

The course length varies between three and four months, depending on each learner’s prior licensing and driving experience. Upon completion, participants are supported by Branston, the college’s key employment partner, to help secure job opportunities once their HGV licence has been obtained.
