Higher Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship is like a job, but with an added element of study. You’ll spend most of your time doing on-the-job training, and the rest studying at College.

How do higher apprenticeships work?

Level 4 apprenticeships are equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree, or a Higher National Certificate (HNC).

Level 5 apprenticeships are equivalent to a foundation degree, or a Higher National Diploma (HND).

If you want to gain further qualifications, you can go on to complete a degree apprenticeship – the equivalent to an undergraduate or master’s degree.

An apprenticeship is like a job, but with an added element of study. You’ll spend most of your time doing on-the-job training, and the rest studying at College.

At the end of the apprenticeship, you’ll have an assessment to check you can confidently perform your role. If you pass, you’ll be awarded your apprenticeship. The assessment is nothing to worry about, you’ll have been building up to it throughout your time at the apprenticeship.

FAQs

A Higher Apprenticeship could be exactly what you need to begin the career of your dreams, but how do you know if it’s right for you? Check out the FAQs below or get in touch with us directly by contacting us here.

What are the entry requirements?

To be eligible for a higher apprenticeship, you need to be:

  • aged 16 or over

  • living in England

  • not in full-time education

An apprenticeship is a real job, so you’ll also need to meet any other criteria set out by the employer. Entry requirements are different depending on the employer and the industry you’re going into.

A higher-level apprenticeship entry requirement can include:

  • English or maths GCSEs at grade 4/C or above

  • UCAS points of 48 or more dependent on the apprenticeship level and any embedded qualifications such as a HNC

Some employers may be looking for people who have taken relevant subjects or apprenticeships. For example, a lab-based apprenticeship may require a science A level.

To find out what level might suit you, look at current apprenticeship vacancies and their entry requirements. You’ll then be able to decide if you might be more suitable for a different level.

How do higher apprenticeships work?

An apprenticeship is like a job, but with an added element of study. You’ll spend most of your time doing on-the-job training, and the rest studying with your college or training provider.

At the end of the apprenticeship, you’ll have an assessment to check you can confidently perform your role. If you pass, you’ll be awarded your apprenticeship. The assessment is nothing to worry about, you’ll have been building up to it throughout your time at the apprenticeship.

How do I apply for a higher apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is like a job, so you apply directly through the employer. You’ll need to submit a CV and answer some questions about yourself. If you get through the first stage, you’ll be invited to an interview and may have to complete an assessment centre.

Can I do an apprenticeship if I am older than 19?

Yes. There is no age limit for apprenticeships. In the first year you would receive the apprenticeship minimum wage. However, after the first year of your apprenticeship, your pay would rise to the minimum apprenticeship wage for ages 21 and over.

How much will I get paid?

You will be employed as a full-time member of staff and you will earn at least the minimum hourly apprenticeship wage. There are different rates of pay for apprentices depending on your age and what year of your apprenticeship you are in. You will be paid at least the National Minimum Wage apprenticeship rate for your age.

How much will an apprenticeship cost me?

There is no cost to you. You will earn a wage while you study for your qualification and you will not have to pay anything to Lincoln College or your employer. If you are undertaking a Higher Apprenticeship, you could get paid to get a Foundation or Honours Degree!

How long will my apprenticeship last?

All apprenticeships last at least twelve months and depending on the qualification may last up to three years. Please speak to your apprenticeship tutor for more information on the duration of your apprenticeship.

Can I access student discounts?

Yes. As a Lincoln College student, you can apply for a NUS TOTUM discount card or sign up for UNiDAYS, both of which will provide you with student discounts at a range of shops and eateries around Lincoln and beyond!
