What is a Foundation and Top-Up degree, and what are the benefits to studying this way?
Lincoln College University Centre offers Sports Therapy and Sports Coaching, Education and Development courses as Foundation and Top-Up degrees, which combine academic study with work-based learning. Foundation Degrees typically focus on a particular industry with the aim of equipping students for a career in that sector.
Students who complete a Foundation degree (FdSc or FdA) might then choose to continue with their studies with our Top-up Degree, which enables suitably qualified applicants to join the final year of a full Bachelor's degree programme.
Foundation degrees are ideal if you’re unsure about taking a full degree or if you want to study while you work. Whether you’re working in or towards the role now, you can gain professional and technical skills to further your career – within a shorter time frame than a full degree.
If you have successfully completed a Foundation Degree or Higher National Diploma (HND), a top-up degree can be an excellent way to boost your existing qualifications and open up new career or educational possibilities. These programmes typically take just one year to complete, but as a top-up student you have the opportunity to graduate with a full honours degree.
Our top-up degrees enable suitably qualified students to join the final year of an undergraduate degree programme directly by taking into account these prior qualifications as equivalent to Years 1 and 2 of a Bachelor's degree.
In summary, foundation degrees provide a practical and efficient route to gaining industry-specific skills, while top-up degrees offer a streamlined path to achieving a full bachelor’s qualification. The choice depends on individual circumstances and career goals. 🎓🌟

Why did you choose this course and why Lincoln College?
I completed the Level 3 Sports Coaching course at Lincoln c=College, so I decided to stay for a few reasons:
1. Familiarity – staying local meant I kept a sense of familiarity in terms of geographical location at a time of uncertainty (during the COVID-19 pandemic). Furthermore, staying at the college to complete a degree meant I already knew some of the staff, which made the transition to Higher Education that much easier.
2. Cost – to do the same course at ‘mainstream’ universities would have incurred a higher cost, so it was a no-brainer to complete the same course for a lower price at the college.
3. Practical aspects – before signing up for the course, I was passed some information from the course lead regarding what it would consist of. One thing which stood out to me was the chance to gain practical experience to apply learning throughout the course, which is something that is not guaranteed to take place at other Higher Education establishments.
What did you enjoy most about your course?
Overall, across the three years, there were many enjoyable moments, a couple of things that stand out are the practical element of delivering PE lessons to local primary schools. Initially, this was something that I did not think I would enjoy, however once applying myself during the lessons I found it very enjoyable and rewarding by having an impact to inspire children to take part in PE.
Another part of the course which was enjoyable would be some of the topics/modules undertaken, certain topics I would not have considered concerning sports, such as the relationship between sports and politics within the sports development module.
What advice would you give to someone else looking at studying the same course?
If you have an interest in sports and want to learn more about sports as a whole, then I would highly recommend this course, especially if you want to learn the wider perspective of sports and maybe do not want to just play sports and excel in the academic side of sport. This course places an emphasis on considering everything relating to sports and PE, whilst also providing practical opportunities.
Where has your degree taken you? (If you have already graduated)
In September 2024, I will commence my journey to becoming a primary school teacher. This was a decision largely based on the back of this course at Lincoln College, teaching was not something I had considered before, especially not primary education, however after being exposed to primary PE during the course and the experiences gained throughout the three years, I decided becoming a primary school teacher was the right thing for me.
Do you have any further comments about the course or Lincoln College University Centre?
One final point to note would be the class sizes, typically these tend to be relatively small class sizes. This is a massive advantage at this stage of education, it enabled the staff to offer more in-depth support should it be required, which was definitely helpful in the first year of Higher Education to settle down the transition from Level 3 to university standards of work. This is something that would be a rarity at many Higher Education establishments, due to the nature of lecture halls and the mass number of students in these halls at one time.

Why did you choose this course and why Lincoln College?
I progressed from the internal Level 3 course at Lincoln College and the reason I stayed on at the College to study Higher Education was a combination of Covid-19 and not wanting to get stuck in a hall somewhere in a big city paying for no reason. Especially, when the cost to study at Lincoln College University Centre was considerably smaller than other institutions.
Moreover, the staff at college were amazing with me personally, and I knew them all particularly well, since I had been studying at the College since I was 16 on the Sports Coaching Level 2 course.
The environment created by the tutors were welcoming and motivating which was the deciding reason to join the Higher Education programmes. Moreover, I can happily say those making the decision of where to study, should seriously considering studying at Lincoln College University Centre and I can confirm that there is not a harder working team with the best intentions to support you anywhere else.
What did you enjoy most about your course?
The most enjoyable aspect of the course has to be the practical delivery of lessons at the schools. This experience is unlike anything else I have observed or been a part of elsewhere. The quality of detail learned and implemented is incredible.
Moreover, the history of politics and why the curriculum is constantly changing etc all that stuff you don’t even realise is a thing, plus new and fun ways to learn consistently throughout the course to keep engagement.
What advice would you give to someone else looking at studying the same course?
The advice I would give to other joining the course would be, if you are going to do the course do it properly, and by that I mean don’t just joining in teaching and the small bits, jump in with both feet and I promise you the outcome you get will be ten times as good, especially with the kids. Think outside the box and be creative (you really can’t fail) - you get back what you put in so go the extra mile, the reward is worth it.
Where has your degree taken you
I have since graduated, currently I am studying a PGCE and QTS in secondary school PE, so I will be working in schools from September gaining my qualification so I can be a teacher.

The course does allow you to join the BGU sports club or associations as it a BGU validated course. In order to join the sports teams your best bet is to contact BGU teams directly and they will let you know when the trails are for the teams.
