Lincoln College’s Access to University students marked a major milestone as they graduated in a celebratory ceremony held at The Drill, surrounded by proud friends and family. The event recognised the determination and dedication these adult learners have shown throughout their studies.
The Access to University programme, also known as Access to HE Diplomas, is an intensive one-year course tailored for adults aiming to pursue higher education. Offering the equivalent UCAS points to three A Levels, the diploma is a valuable stepping stone towards a wide range of university degrees.
Lincoln College works in close partnership with higher education providers, including its own Lincoln College University Centre, to ensure that students are well-prepared for the academic demands of degree-level study.
With no upper age limit, the courses are designed to be accessible to those returning to education after a break, as well as individuals seeking a change in career direction. The programme is structured to accommodate family and work commitments, making it a practical option for adult learners.
Students can choose from a variety of subject pathways aligned with their future ambitions, including nursing, midwifery, paramedic science, business, psychology, English literature, chemistry, and policing.
Academic skills are embedded throughout the curriculum, helping students build confidence in research, academic writing, referencing, presentations, and report writing. Dedicated support is also provided throughout the UCAS application process.
Kimberly Mee, Curriculum Lead for Access to University, expressed her pride in the students' achievements:
“We are exceptionally proud of all our Access to University students who graduated today. Over the course of the year, they have grown in both knowledge and confidence, achieving outstanding results while managing the complex responsibilities of being an adult learner.
“The course has clearly made a life-changing impact, and we’re excited to see what they go on to achieve as they move into university and future professional careers.”
Many students fund their studies through an Advanced Learner Loan which is written off upon completion of a degree, making this an accessible route to higher education for adult learners ready to take the next step.
