A Lincoln College apprentice has secured a full time job in the college’s Facilities department following a successful apprenticeship.

Aimee Brooks, 19, initially started off as a Level 3 Travel and Tourism student at the Lincoln Campus, but soon needed to make a decision about options beyond Further Education.

Aimee says: “I was thinking, do I go to university and have that experience, or do I start to work? I heard about an apprenticeship here and joined the Facilities team in June 2023.”

Since then, Aimee has handled vehicle bookings and front of house duties as an apprentice, but is now a full time Facilities Operations Assistant.

Aimee adds: “Now I’m full time, my duties have changed, I now handle projects on the facilities side. This can cover anything from roofing, access control and planning ahead for the summer when we do a majority of the maintenance work on the College campus. I’ve also started to work on the finance aspect of Facilities too.”

Head of Facilities Operations at Lincoln College, Gary Luff, said: “Aimee is a great example of how an apprenticeship can provide a valuable opportunity to learn skills for increased employability in a real work environment. This really is a case of earn while you learn.

“The key is to ensure that the right support, advice and mentoring is given throughout the apprenticeship to give individuals the opportunity to shine. Our mission statement at Lincoln College mission statement includes our wish 'To be an extraordinary employer-led organisation; producing a highly skilled and productive local workforce'.

“What better way to demonstrate this than by offering employment to our apprentices?”

Aimee’s reasons for electing to go down the apprenticeship and work route was based on the demands of current job roles, she explains: “A lot of jobs require a level of experience that it is difficult to come by these days, so I thought rather than university, an apprenticeship and a full time role would suit me best. I’m also working part time towards an Open University degree in Business Management, which will take six years but at the same time I’m earning and have a great job.”

Talking about her apprenticeship, Aimee says: “I really recommend an apprenticeship, this particular one meant that there was a lot of self starting and lots of assignments to complete under your own steam. Thankfully I’ve been used to this kind of learning as I was part of the year group that meant Covid disrupted our GCSEs and so I am used to motivating myself to achieve.

“That kind of mindset means I am really enjoying planning ahead for our summer efficiency plan over the summer too.”
