Art students exhibit at prestigious public gallery

Emerging makers from the Art and Design Foundation Diploma at Lincoln and Newark College present their final pieces at Sleaford's National Centre for Craft and Design.

The exhibition runs in the rooftop gallery there until 8th September 2019 and features the artwork of eight learners, who were selected for the quality of their innovative work across a variety of disciplines and media.

Student Jay Morris has on show a textile installation that depicts the damage that human activity and population growth is causing to the existence of the rainforests.

Jay said, “I was delighted and thrilled to find out that my final piece had been selected. It’s a great honour to have the opportunity to display work in a nationally recognised gallery whilst still a student and I couldn’t quite believe my luck! I’ve had so many lovely comments too.”

Amy Barlow, from the Newark College campus, highlights the unseen impact of fast fashion in her project. She said, “I am so surprised and really pleased that my work is being showcased in the exhibition.

“I hope the message contained in my piece makes people stop and think about their purchases and the far reaching effect they can have.”

The public have so far been impressed: “We’ve had so many comments from visitors who say the artwork is comparable to the standard they see from long established makers,” said Susannah Sendall, the Visitor Experience Assistant at the Gallery.

The course leader, Daniel Rapley commented: “It's a fantastic opportunity for the selected students to display their work for the first time in an internationally renowned public gallery.

“It's been a huge privilege to be involved and to be able to showcase the great work we're doing here to a large public audience.

“Most of the students will be beginning creative degree courses in September at various universities across the country. The Foundation course at Lincoln College has an excellent reputation for preparing creative students for progression into higher education.”
