Award of Courage Presented to Automotive Student

A Newark College student has been recognised for her determination and resilience after overcoming significant personal challenges to pursue her true passion.

Phoebe Walker-Price, a Level 1 Automotive student, was awarded the Award of Courage by the Rotary Club of Newark on 16 March.

Phoebe’s path to success has not been without obstacles. When she first contacted the College to enquire about courses, she was extremely nervous and anxious following a difficult experience at school. She was invited in for an informal chat and encouraged to bring someone along for support. Despite her anxiety, Phoebe arrived on her own - a significant first step that marked the beginning of her transformation.

Phoebe initially enrolled at Newark College in September 2024, studying Childcare. While her outgoing personality and enthusiasm for college life quickly became evident, she struggled to settle into the course and often found herself feeling overwhelmed.

In the summer term of 2025, Phoebe applied for a Level 2 Creative Media course. However, it soon became clear that this was not the right career path for her, and she continued to feel unsettled.

A turning point came towards the end of September 2025 when Phoebe met with a Careers Guidance Adviser. Taking the time to explore her interests, it emerged that her real passion lay in vehicles - cars, trucks and lorries. With this in mind, Phoebe made the bold decision to transfer onto the Level 1 Automotive Engineering course.

Phoebe, a Newark College student, said: “It feels absolutely amazing because it’s my first award. Since I’ve started Automotive, I’ve realised that it’s going to be the way forward for me - I really enjoy it. I believe that I can do well in Automotive.”

The impact of this change has been remarkable. Phoebe has embraced her studies with enthusiasm and is noticeably calmer, happier and more focused. Not only has she engaged fully with her automotive course, but she has also excelled in her English and maths classes.

Beyond the classroom, Phoebe has become an active member of the college community. She regularly participates in lunchtime clubs with Project You, supports open days and welcome events, and has even featured on the College’s social media channels, sharing her positive experiences with others.

Looking ahead, Phoebe is preparing to undertake work experience at a local garage in Newark this June, with the hope that it may lead to an apprenticeship opportunity.
