Beyond the Pitch: Celebrating Pan Ability Football and Student Contributions

The Lincoln College Team has truly excelled this academic year. Today, we were delighted to dedicate the afternoon to celebrating their achievements!

The Lincoln College Pan Ability Football Team has truly excelled this academic year. Today, we were delighted to dedicate the afternoon to celebrating their achievements, as well as the students outside the team who have contributed their skills to support their peers alongside family and staff.

Comprising 12 dedicated players, all of whom have an EHCP, disability, or additional learning needs, the team has not only excelled on the pitch but has also become a beacon of inclusion, determination, and inspiration across the college community.

Alice Ferrier, Supported Education Lecturer and Football Team Manager, said: “It has been an absolute privilege to manage the Pan Ability football team. Week after week, these incredible players have not only displayed talent on the pitch, but they’ve also shown the very best of what sport can bring to people.”

Award Winners

A series of awards were presented to the team, including the Stuart Waters-Manning Award, in honour of Stuart, a student who sadly passed away last year. This award recognised student Ben Graham for his outstanding performance and dedication within the Pan Ability team, demonstrating exceptional skills and remarkable achievements that contributed significantly to the team’s success.

The Personal Growth Award was presented to student Michael Fergie-Tansley, who has been an inspiration to the team. Football has become his outlet, his motivation, and above all, his means of personal transformation.

Also in the football team, Callum Belton was recognised for being a star pupil in Functional Skills English.

Overview of Team Achievements Over the Year

The team has had an extraordinary season, competing at the highest levels of Pan Ability football across the country. Among their achievements was securing second place nationally at the AoC Sport National Championships in April 2025, finishing with 18 points and an impressive goal difference of +8. They secured first-place finishes in every major qualifying event, including those held in December 2024 at Loughborough College and March 2025 at YPLP Lincoln.

The season culminated in them winning the ECFA Pan Ability Finals (St George’s Cup) on 14th May 2025 – a crowning achievement that capped off a season of relentless progress.

Overall, they played 22 matches, winning 18, drawing 2, and losing 2. They scored 44 goals, conceded 8, and kept 16 clean sheets.

These statistics speak volumes about their dedication and tactical discipline; they illustrate how far the team has come and the impact they have made.

Each player’s journey is a testament to resilience. The team trains with purpose and pride despite the barriers they face. Many players report improved confidence, a greater sense of belonging, and enhanced engagement in their studies as a result of their involvement in football. The team environment is built not just on footballing skills, but on empathy, mutual support, and aspiration.

Beyond the Pitch

A highlight of the afternoon was the wonderful showcase by Level 3 Creative Media Production student George, who followed the team’s journey and produced a 46-minute documentary, Beyond the Pitch. It captures the highs and lows, pre- and post-match interviews, and showcases the team’s determination while celebrating diversity in sport.

Alice continued: “Watching George’s documentary about the team was a powerful reminder of just how much this team means to its players. For many, it’s been more than football – it’s been a voice, a community, and a place to grow. I hope the lessons they’ve learned here – about perseverance, belief, and unity – carry with them far beyond the pitch.”

Not only that, but the Supported Education Skills for Catering students also produced a lovely spread, including Smoked Salmon & Horseradish Mousse Bellinis, Wild Mushroom & Tarragon Vol-au-Vents, and Marinated Chicken Skewers.

Supported Intern student Sharon White, who is completing her internship at Lincoln College’s Project You, has been busy with today’s event setup, including table centres, décor, and player-themed table names. Alongside this, she has decorated the common room for other student events, including VE Day, Mental Health Awareness Week, and preparations for Pride Week activities.

The afternoon was a fantastic collaboration that extended beyond the football team and celebrated the wonderful efforts of students across various disciplines at the college.
