Carpentry & Joinery students planting seeds for the future

Lincoln College Carpentry & Joinery students have created four large planters for a local therapy garden in partnership with Green Synergy, as part of their Work Experience (WEX). 

Green Synergy provides the people of Lincoln and the surrounding areas with access to a wide range of gardening, horticultural, and community activities, projects, and events. Their aim is to foster happier, healthier, stronger, and more sustainable individuals and communities. 

For this social action project, Green Synergy supplied all the materials, giving the students a fantastic opportunity to apply their skills in a real-world context. The project involved seeing a client job through from start to finish — from initial brief to material quotes, measurements, and execution — all while ensuring safe working practices. 

Kaitlyn Sanderson Stevenson, a Level 3 Diploma in Site Carpentry student, explained: "We began by using our contextualised Maths and English skills to calculate the cost of the job, as well as to determine how much material we would need to build the planters. 

"We then emailed the project manager with the quote and an explanation of the materials required. Once the materials arrived, we marked out where the holes needed to go for the screws, drilled and countersunk the holes, and began assembling each layer. After that, we attached four layers together to complete one planter. Finally, we bolted the planters to the pallets, and they were sent to Thesiger Street." 

Lincoln College adds significant social and economic value to the region and provides students with valuable experience, enabling them to make an impact in their sector.
