Carpentry & Joinery students Jayden, Rhys, Isaac, Jack and Josh recently represented Lincoln College and Newark College at the annual Institute of Carpenters (IOC) competition held at Derby College.
Nine colleges from across the Midlands took part, showcasing the very best emerging talent in the Carpentry & Joinery sector.
After four hours of intense competition, it paid off for Newark College second-year Level 3 student Isaac, who won second place and £1,000 worth of tools. Rhys, a Lincoln College student, also secured a finalist position, achieving a close fourth place.
Paul Barnes, Curriculum Lead in Carpentry & Joinery, Furniture Making, Technical & Professional Studies and Multi-Skills at Lincoln College, said: “It’s great to see the cross-campus representation from the Lincoln College Group, with students showcasing their skills at a regional level and gaining a fantastic opportunity to be recognised in the industry and rewarded for their efforts. We are proud of them all.”
Richard Galbraith, President of the Institute of Carpenters, said: “The Merlane Trophy continues to highlight the exceptional talent coming through our colleges. The level of skill, focus, and professionalism on display today has been outstanding.
“These students represent the future of our industry, and competitions like this are essential in supporting their development.”
The event brought together students, employers and industry leaders, reigniting the importance of hands-on carpentry and joinery skills in a sector critical to the UK’s future growth.
