An inspiring visit from Paul Gibson, Chief Constable of Lincolnshire Police, gave 50 second-year Level 3 Policing students at Lincoln College a unique insight into policing at the highest level on Friday 19th September.
The Chief Constable, who brings over 25 years of experience across five different police forces, captivated students with stories from his remarkable career journey. Originally a doctor at St James’ Hospital in Leeds, he spoke about what spurred him to make a bold career shift. Selected as 1 of just 12 candidates for the National Accelerated Programme, he described how his motivation stemmed from a desire to intervene and protect vulnerable people from harm.
Now leading Lincolnshire’s police force, the Chief Constable shared how he continues to use his skills to support others and improve the service from within.
Paul Gibson, Chief Constable of Lincolnshire Police, said: “Being able to spend some time talking about the importance of policing - what it’s about, presenting it as an attractive career to aspire to, influencing young people by explaining the ins and outs of the profession, and hearing their views - is absolutely fantastic.
“Students were asking some really in-depth and quite thought-provoking questions, which is great. There are probably people here who will become our future constables - perhaps even our future Chief Constable, who knows.
“Being able to present Lincolnshire Police in a positive light and as an attractive employer is, I believe, hugely important. It’s been a real pleasure - I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it.”
Throughout his visit, the Chief Constable spoke about the importance of public trust and the principle of policing by consent - a cornerstone of UK policing where officers act in the public's best interest. He highlighted the high level of responsibility placed on police officers, often operating in fast-paced, high-risk environments. The topics aligned closely with current course content, particularly Unit 6: Government and the Protective Services, offering students a real-world context to their studies.
The insightful talk also underpinned the wide variety of roles within the police beyond frontline duties, encouraging students to consider paths they may not have thought possible. From the Regional Intelligence Unit and Sensitive Intelligence Unit to Covert Operations, Digital Capabilities, Fraud, and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) units, students were introduced to the many specialist areas that make up a modern, dynamic police force.
This visit formed part of the students’ Enrichment programme - an essential element of their timetable designed to broaden understanding and offer a taste of future career possibilities within the police. Hearing directly from the Chief Constable provided invaluable context and inspiration as they prepare for careers in policing.
Students seized the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions, particularly around funding and police visibility in the county. The Chief Constable addressed concerns about Lincolnshire Police’s relatively low staffing levels, explaining that the force has fewer officers compared to other regions. He emphasised that doubling the number of officers would not only improve public engagement and visibility but also enable the creation of more specialised teams.
With insight from the county’s highest-ranking officer, Lincoln College’s aspiring police professionals now have a clearer view of the path ahead - and the vital role they could one day play in serving and protecting their communities.
