Lincoln College first-year Dance students recently took part in an intensive weeklong programme delivered by Circus Starlight Company, culminating in a final showcase at The Drill in Lincoln.
The programme introduced students to a wide range of circus and aerial performance skills designed to support their development within the performing arts industry. Throughout the week, students trained with experienced industry professionals specialising in a variety of disciplines, gaining hands-on experience in both technical and creative performance practices.
Funded through Arts Council England and National Lottery funding, the project provides young people with access to professional-level training opportunities free of charge through subsidised workshops and performances.
Jane Hewitt, Dance Coordinator at Lincoln College, said: “This has been a really exciting opportunity for our first-year students. The programme has allowed them to challenge themselves creatively while building confidence, coordination, teamwork and performance skills within a supportive environment.”
Workshops were structured to provide focused and in-depth learning, with students split into smaller groups to maximise contact time with instructors and ensure safe use of specialist equipment.
During the week, students explored a variety of circus disciplines including aerial hoop, aerial silks, contortion, showgirl dance styles, prop manipulation such as juggling and poi, stilt walking, and hula hoop skills.
By the end of the programme, students had developed strong foundational skills that can support future progression into Higher Education, professional training, and careers within the performing arts sector. The experience also included a professional photoshoot to capture and celebrate the students’ achievements throughout the week.
