Equine Student Takes Strides at Prestigious Jumping Competition

Second-year student Fenella Walker-Harris competes at Burghley Horse Trails.

Fenella Walker-Harris, a second-year Equine Management student at Lincoln College, was selected to represent her Pony Club team at the prestigious Jumping Competition, held at the world-renowned Burghley Horse Trials on Thursday 4 September.

The Burghley Horse Trials is the world’s largest 5-star eventing competition, attracting elite riders from across the globe. Many of today’s top competitors began their journey through grassroots competitions like this one - just as Fenella has.

Fenella has shown great dedication in the lead-up to the event, training extensively with her horse, Big Mac. Known for being challenging and sometimes unpredictable, Big Mac tested Fenella’s resilience and skill - but she rose to the occasion. Despite some nerves, she took the experience in her stride and was rewarded with a rosette for her efforts.

The show jumping arena at Burghley is the beating heart of the event, with an electric atmosphere and hundreds of spectators - including Olympic riders and world number ones - looking on.

Alexandra Esser, Lecturer in Equine at Lincoln College, said: “Like a true equestrian, she rode confidently into the ring and cleared every fence. We’re incredibly proud of Fenella and all the hard work she’s put in to reach this level.”

Fenella Walker-Harris, Equine Management student, said: “I’ve visited Burghley many times before, but this was by far the biggest event I’ve ever competed in - and it was an incredible experience. For Mac to perform so well made it even more special. When I first got him three years ago, he was a very nervous horse, but with a lot of training, care, and patience, he’s become almost unrecognisable. He really showed his potential out there.”

In addition to her studies, Fenella is also active in the extreme sport of Horseboarding - a dynamic event where a rider on horseback tows a board rider through an obstacle course. Starting in 2023 alongside her brother, Fenella won her first competition at the Yorkshire-based Living Heritage Show and went on to finish second overall in the 2023 league. In 2024, she took the top spot and will progress to the Elite League next year.
