Sharni-Lee, Megan and Rosie, all studying Level 3 Hairdressing For Colour Technicians, wowed a panel of industry-expert judges with their talents and hard work, to gain a place in the finals of Concept Hair Learner of the Year 2021.
Each student had to design and execute a hair style and look based on a set criteria, which included instructions such as time frame, theme and whether extras such as hair extensions and ornamental pieces could be used.
Megan, whose theme was entitled ‘Celebration of Colour’, said once she had received her entry criteria she got straight to work on her design.
“Once we’d received our criteria, our tutor Lesley, who has been super supportive of everyone who entered, let us work on our competition looks in college. Hair colour isn’t cheap, and as the theme was celebration of colour I ended up using 14 colours so her support was a huge help in making the vision come to life.”
Sharni-Lee said she originally entered the competition to help with her confidence and to put her skills to the test.
She said: “I decided to enter Concept Hair Learner of the Year to gain confidence, to get my name out into the hairdressing industry, to show my skills and what I'm capable off and to meet new people with the same interests as myself.”
Rosie described her design as a ‘sleek, smooth look’, inspired by designs and images she’d seen on social media.
“The design for the hair style was a sleek and smooth ‘updo’, I found this fitted in with the theme ‘red carpet’ as it’s such a classy way to present the hair and at the minute it’s a very popular choice. Instagram inspired me a lot, I follow a lot of people that do weddings.”
Lesley Elliot, hair lecturer at Newark College said: “All the Level 3 Hairdressing group participate in competition work and I am thrilled that Megan, Sharni-Lee and Rosie are through to the finals of this fantastic competition.
“This shows their true talent and imagination as hair stylists. It is important that all our learners showcase their skills to future employers especially in these unpredictable times.”
All three students are on the Level 3 Hairdressing For Colour Technicians course, which is designed to develop the creative skills of learners to allow them to produce work that can be used on the catwalk and on photo shoots. The course covers a range of units including how to cut hair using a range of techniques, how to creatively style hair and hair colouring techniques.
