Industry Placement success for IT student Oliver

March 28 2022

A student at Lincoln College who designed and create a new website for a national marketing company has been praised for his work on the project.

Oliver Morten is studying for a L3 Diploma in IT and spent time working with The Smoother Circle marketing company as part of the college’s Industry Placement programme.

The Smoother Circle’s Managing Director Gary Milner, said he and his team were absolutely delighted with the website and Oliver’s commitment to his work during the placement.

And in a letter to Oliver following the placement, Gary Milner said: “I wanted to personally write to you to express my gratitude for your work building our new company website.

“I understand you not only fulfilled your work experience of 30 hours but put in extra hours of your own time to ensure that the website was finished before you returned to college. The end result is a professional website and something we can be proud of.

“You have shown both yourself and Lincoln College in an excellent light, and such a great work ethic.”

Oliver said he was able to put into practise the knowledge and practical skills he’s gained through his course at Lincoln College, which focuses on areas including web development, programming and mobile phone apps.

Oliver did a total of 30 hours with The Smoother Circle over a ten-week period, and chose the company because they needed a website designed and it was something he wanted to get involved with.

Oliver was given a basic brief on what the company needed from the website and began working on it straight away, checking in with the managing directors regularly.

“I was given the wording and the graphics and an idea of how they wanted it to look. I was a little nervous when it went live, but it went really well and I’m really pleased with it.”

Oliver has another year left of his course after which he plans to stay on at Lincoln College to study the degree course.

Caroline Evans, Industry Placement Co-Ordinator at Lincoln College, said: “Work experience is a vital part of the course for all of our study programme learners here at Lincoln College and with the present Covid implications is something we are really trying to encourage all students to take part in.

“Opportunities to join working teams in the workplace or even virtually are vital to develop key employability skills. Oliver had experience of both face-to-face working and also joining the wider work team on virtual meetings and was able to develop on his confidence, and problem solving skills.”
