It was a night of heroic tales, spectacular achievements and astonishing accolades as Lincoln College celebrated its learners at Lincoln and Newark College, as well as the Air & Space Institute.
Hosted by BBC Radio Humberside presenter Carla Green, the chosen theme was superheroes.
Learners and their invited guests, as well as tutors and sponsors gathered at the College’s own The Drill venue in Lincoln to recognise some incredible talent, overcoming adversity and amazing achievements this academic year.
Kicking off with a superhero-themed dance from the College’s performing arts students and peppered with musical numbers from a specially-formed college band and two solo singers, the entertainment also followed the heroic theme.
Mark Locking, Principal and CEO of Lincoln College Group, said: “To have a theme this year was especially fitting. We believe all of our learners are superheroes and to recognise them on such a scale is always truly special. It was heartening to hear some of the stories that led to nominations and as many people relayed to me on the night, were really inspiring.
“We all have a tendency to simply go through life without pausing to reflect and to ensure we single out remarkable young people like this is something we love to do.”
One of the stories that particularly stood out was Adam Gillingwater’s experience and his subsequent success.
Rushed to hospital after a series of headaches in secondary school, Adam’s world crumbled as he was diagnosed with a brain tumour just before his GCSEs. Despite this, his exam results were brilliant and he has gone on to study with us at Lincoln College, specialising in film making on his Creative Media Production course.
Tutors described that they have consistently produced work of an outstanding standard and shown a deep understanding of the craft.
Adam has not only filmed at gigs for the Lincoln College Music Course, but has also been accepted onto the British Film Institute (BFI) Academy, which is an amazing achievement. He has also single-handedly produced a fascinating and informative documentary exploring the Lincoln punk scene, speaking to promoters, bands and gig goers and producing a narrative on masculinity alongside the music.
Adam said: “It feels very good to win, it’s not been the easiest time at all, but I was really happy to create a great documentary and have that included in the Boston Film Festival. I can’t wait to make more independent films and get them out there and do what I love.”
Attendees were also further inspired by a guest speech from the ASI’s first graduating Officer in the RAF, Pilot Officer Ellie Ford, who had recorded a message from deployment and was introduced live by guest of honour, RAF Squadron Leader, Helen Grantham.
