Lincoln College Continue to Transform Confidence Through Tailored Support

Nathan Sutherland, a student at Lincoln College, approached Student Services feeling overwhelmed and ready to drop out of his course.

Nathan Sutherland, a student at Lincoln College, approached Student Services feeling overwhelmed and ready to drop out of his course. He was struggling to keep up with the class he had enrolled on and felt it was his only option.

As a first step, Nathan agreed to meet with Cathy, the Adult Progress Coach, to explore whether support could help.

Without any formal diagnosis of neurodiversity, Nathan was offered a 40-minute Cognassist assessment to identify his learning needs. This gave him valuable insight into his learning profile, identifying challenges with processing speed and numeracy.

Following this, Nathan committed to a personalised support plan which included:

  • Weekly one-to-one coaching

  • Pre-teaching to prepare for upcoming lessons

  • In-class support to build confidence and understanding

By previewing lesson content in advance and receiving quiet, tailored support during sessions, Nathan began to understand topics more clearly and felt less anxious.

The Impact meant that Nathan:

  • ✅ Returned to lessons with increased confidence

  • ✅ Gradually reduced reliance on in-class support

  • ✅ Improved understanding of GCSE Maths topics

  • ✅ Developed greater independence in learning

Over time, Nathan regained the confidence to attend lessons independently and is now engaged, motivated, and keen to continue his learning journey next year.

“Cathy has helped me through a difficult time in Maths. She has got me to a stage I feel more capable than ever before and like I am prepared for what the exams will throw at me, giving me a more positive outlook towards approaching exams and Maths in general. It has been a delight working with Cathy.”
