It was a night of winners, recognition and an appeal to the industry at Lincolnshire’s annual property awards at Lincolnshire Showground.
Lincoln College, who were the headline sponsor for the Greater Lincolnshire Construction & Property Awards, had three young hopefuls nominated for the Apprentice of the Year Award, but the main focus was to let the gathered industry know that the Lincoln College Group was ready to work with them.
Vice Principal, Julie Sullivan and Assistant Principal – Construction, Paul Gregory took their opportunity during their sponsor’s speaking slot to highlight the chances there were present in the county for apprentices to shine, but highlighted that the industry needed to do it’s part too.
Julie said: “We see so many inspiring young people come through our doors that could be entering the industry locally but simply aren’t being given the opportunity.
“That’s not to say we aren’t seeing apprentices doing really well, learners being taken on for work experience and taken on for T-Levels, but some of the figures we’re seeing are truly astounding.
“For example, just 3% of our electrical and plumbing learners last year went on to apprenticeships. In short, we need your help!”
Paul added: “There’s often talk of skills gaps and as much as you guys might be losing talent as older workers retire or wind down, there’s a queue of younger talent all waiting to be trained and employed.
“We’re training more than 200 leavers per year that could be turning up bright-eyed and bushy tailed to help you grow and be the workforce of the future.”
As well as this message, Lincoln College’s joinery learners also provided excellent wooden centrepieces for the awards tables. Made with 3D printing technology and with digital etching, this was a showcase for the skills that our learners have and what they are capable of.
Julie added: “This was an excellent evening, celebrating the talent that we have within the county and we want to extend a well done to all nominees and winners.”
