Level 2 Multi-Skills, Carpentry and Joinery and Plumbing students at Lincoln College have taken on a unique design and build challenge with real-world impact.
The students were tasked with designing and building bespoke centrepieces for the prestigious Greater Lincolnshire Construction and Property Awards, an annual event that recognises and celebrates the outstanding talent, innovation, and achievements within the construction and property sectors across Greater Lincolnshire.
It brings together industry leaders, rising stars, and local businesses to honour excellence and highlight the vital role these sectors play in driving the region’s economy and enriching its communities.
Working to a professional brief set by the Chamber, the students developed design ideas that reflect innovation, craftsmanship, and the spirit of the construction community.
After presenting their concepts on 12th December, the judging panel made up of representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and local employer R G Carter, selected three designs.
The creators of the winning designs include Akintomiwa Akintunde and Jake Johnson, Mason Spur and Jayden Gray, with Rhys Watson and Tom Atkinson being highly commended.
The winners will see their work featured on every table at the awards ceremony, with the Level 2 Multi-Skills cohort coming together to manufacture the final pieces in the college workshops.
Lecturers say the project gives learners a rare opportunity to work on a live brief - mirroring the expectations, collaboration, and deadlines found in industry. Students are responsible not only for the aesthetics of the pieces but also for their durability, sustainability, and practicality for a large-scale event.
Chris Newboult, Multi-Skills lecturer at Lincoln College, said “This project allows our students to demonstrate both craftsmanship and imagination. Having their work showcased at such a high-profile event is an incredible motivator and an invaluable experience.”
Courtney Harrison, from Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce, added: “One of our biggest premium events is the Construction and Property Awards, so it’s been wonderful to visit Lincoln College this morning and judge the students’ centrepiece designs.
“Every entry was so unique and followed the brief brilliantly. We always receive so many compliments on the night about where the centrepieces come from, and it’s lovely to be able to share that they’re created by the students themselves.
“We also hope this inspires businesses in the construction and property sector to look to the college for future apprenticeship opportunities.”
The centrepieces will be unveiled at the Greater Lincolnshire Construction and Property Awards later this year, where guests from across Lincolnshire’s Construction community will see the winning students’ creativity take centre stage - literally.
