Lincoln College Students Deliver Impressive Renovation for Community Hub

Two groups of Level 2 Multi Skills students have been working hard to renovate the Lincolnshire-based Saxilby Village Hall. Each group has completed one week’s work experience in a real working environment.

Students have modernised and refreshed the space; the dated village hall had not seen an upgrade in more than 30 years. They have been developing their skills in surface preparation, painting and decorating, tiling, and general maintenance throughout the hall and bathroom areas.

At the community hub, students have been working around members of the public while fitness sessions and group meetings have been taking place. They have demonstrated outstanding professionalism, developed excellent customer service skills, and received superb feedback for being well-mannered and hardworking.

Charlene, one of the students, began her journey at Lincoln College on the Entry Level Skills for Construction course, progressed to Level 1 Multi Skills, and is now completing her Level 2. She hopes to pursue an apprenticeship upon completion.

During her time with us, Charlene has completed work experience onsite with Gelders, as well as a week at Saxilby Village Hall. This exposure to real work is a fantastic way to become industry-ready and prepared for her next steps.

Charlene, a Level 2 Multi Skills student, said: “This week we’ve done a bit of tiling, painting and cutting in on the walls. From this work experience I’ve progressed socially and gained more confidence in my work.”

Steve Hollinworth, Secretary of Saxilby Village Hall, said: “It is tremendous that the college is able to come here to help. It has made a massive improvement to how the hall looks. They’ve also undertaken a great amount of practical work that is going to have a big impact, making it easier to clean and create a tidier environment for everyone. This renovation will make the centre more attractive for visitors at the heart of our community.”

Tracey Hunt, Slimming World Instructor, said: “I’ve really noticed the difference in how bright and modern the hall is now. The students have been really polite and accommodating when my classes have been coming into the hall - they’ve been super.”
