Lincoln’s Grassroots Venue The Drill Recognised in Music Venue Trust Awards

There’s celebrations today at The Drill, Lincoln as the venue has been given an Outstanding Contribution to Grassroots Music Award.

There’s celebrations today at The Drill, Lincoln as the venue, owned and managed by The Lincoln College Group, has been given an Outstanding Contribution to Grassroots Music Award.

Given to all members of the Music Venue Trust to mark ten years of the registered charity that seeks to support and encourage live music in the UK, The Drill were among the recipients on Venues Day 2024, held in London in October.

Commercial Operations Manager at The Drill, Faye Jennings, said: “We’re rightly proud of the variety and quality of the acts that appear here at The Drill, especially when it comes to live music, so to be recognised nationally alongside a whole host of others for our hard work is amazing. We’ve worked hard to bring in local and regional acts to support the city’s music scene too. As a venue that’s part of the live music community here, we put great emphasis on supporting music on all levels. We’re also open for promoters who want to run their own events here.”

Beverley Whitrick, Chief Operating Officer at the MVT, said: “As we celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Venues Day there is much to reflect on and much to look forward to.

“This year we want to recognise and celebrate the artist community without whom we wouldn’t exist and for whom we continue to strive and we look forward to welcoming our colleagues from grassroots music venues around the UK. Venues Day is always an opportunity for us all to meet old friends, share experiences and remind each other that whilst we have all had to endure some very dark days and weather some major storms in recent years we are still here, we are still strong and we remain defiant.”

BBC Radio DJ and host Steve Lamacq delivered the opening speech for the day, which you can watch here.

Threatened with permanent closure, despite being a much-loved community hub in Lincoln, The Drill, a listed building formerly known as The Drill Hall and built in 1890, has been under College ownership since 2021.

Where a lot of independent music venues have faced hardship,  the venue has been lucky to be able to celebrate successful shows and has endeavoured to provide a space for small independent artists who might be performing on stage for the first time all the way up to intimate shows with household names such as  The Libertines, Kiefer Sutherland and Creeper.

The venue also hosts large and small events such as award ceremonies, beer festivals and even weddings.
