“I had an easier time with Nick Ferrari on LBC than today.”
That was Lincoln’s MP, Hamish Falconer’s verdict following a Q&A session with a group of A Level Politics students last Friday.
Lecturer, Tom Jeffery, said: "As part of his constituency engagement, Hamish spent an afternoon fielding questions from a keen group of our Politics learners and I think they did an amazing job of asking important and sometimes very personal and heartfelt questions.
“Our students are very politically aware, and it was clear that they wanted to ask some very important questions about what’s happening in the world right now and Hamish didn’t back down from facing their queries. Having guests like this attend is hugely beneficial for our students and Hamish will have no doubt left with a sense of some very engaged individuals.”
Students spent an hour covering topics as varied as censorship, LGBTQ+ rights, agriculture and more, showing the key issues that young people care about.
Mr Falconer said: “I try and get out to see as many people in Lincoln as possible so this was a great opportunity to meet with the group that we find hardest to answer the door, hardest to engage with and most difficult to get to vote and that’s young people so it was a great session today.
“I had a variety of questions ranging from what we’re doing for the likes of St Giles Nursery to agricultural taxation, they were a very engaged group of young people.”
Chloe Nattriss, 17, said: “Lincoln College is one of the only colleges or sixth forms in the area that does politics so that’s why I’m here. I think it’s really important as a young person that you know what’s going on politically.
“Hearing from Hamish was really good, he clearly knows how to answer questions and even as someone who isn’t from his constituency it was interesting to hear from him. He spoke to us as if he was one of us, so it really helped us connect to him on that level.”
