Megan Watt: "Working at London Fashion Week has filled me with even more passion to make the next chapter of my career a success"

Newark College hairdressing student Megan Watt learned valuable skills working alongside world-renowned stylists, designers and make-up artists at London Fashion Week.

After volunteering for work experience at Philosophy Hair and Beauty Co in Newark, Megan was thrilled to join the team as they styled runway models for London Fashion Week at Somerset House. She tells us all about her experience behind the scenes at one of the world’s biggest fashion events.

Megan was styling for fashion production company Named LDN, who had a collective of international designers showcasing their individual collections. After a live demonstration from senior stylist and Unite Hair’s Creative Director Gary Barker, Megan was assigned her brief and handed models to style.

“Timing was extremely important,” she says.

“There were only 20 stylists and over 90 models so as soon as we had finished one, it was a case of putting our hands up and being given another.

“We had to quickly learn the various styles and techniques for each different model and designer, from poker straight to afro-Caribbean hair, and then execute these to meet the call times for the runway or photo-shoot.

“We then needed to be ready for the next show, which was sometimes at a different venue!”

Megan is thankful that Philosophy Hair and Beauty gave her the opportunity to be so heavily involved and she looks forward to channelling her new found skills in her future studies. She says: “I will be forever grateful to have this experience under my belt after only six months of study. It was fast paced, exciting and terrifying all at once.

“It has shown me another side to the industry and filled me with even more passion, fight and inspiration to complete my course and put all of my new skills towards making the next chapter of my career a success.”
