Three second-year Art & Design students from Newark College have embarked on an exciting residency at Coreset Studios, located in Newark.
The residency, which began in mid-September, will run for six months. Students Tia Cullen (TC), Oscar Kalles, and Hollie Chase are based at Coreset Studios every Monday and have access to the space whenever they need it.
Tia Cullen, a Level 3 Art & Design student, said: “The residency has been an incredible experience so far. Having a dedicated space to create, separate from home, has made such a difference - especially since I don’t have room to work at home. It’s inspiring to collaborate with other artists and be part of an environment that constantly sparks creativity.”
All three students secured their places through a competitive application process, showcasing their portfolios and attending interviews.
Over the coming months, Tia, Oscar, and Hollie will work on a collaborative exhibition centred around the theme of individuality. Their work will explore different interpretations of self - from the conformity experienced in the school system to finding their own voices and identities.
This opportunity is invaluable for their portfolios, offering immersion in the art world and the chance to connect with other artists. With each student working in different mediums and styles, the residency provides a unique space to develop and expand their creative practice.
Sian Marshall, Art & Design Lecturer at Newark College said: "“Tia, Oscar and Hollie are very hardworking and dedicated Level 3 Art & Design students, who’ve worked together in making a successful joint application for the Open Call studio 6-month residency at Coreset Studios, Newark.
"In addition to their course work, they will be working independently on a project, under the mentorship of Rebecca Blackwood (initiator of the creative hub Coreset). The students recognise what a unique and exceptional opportunity it is, to be working alongside professional artists and makers.
"I am very proud of their success and look forward to seeing how their project evolves”
