Newark Automotive Apprentice Secures Finalist Position at WorldSkills UK 2025

Newark College Automotive Apprentice Charlie White has earned a place in the WorldSkills UK National Final, to be held in Wales.

Newark College Automotive Apprentice Charlie White has earned a place in the WorldSkills UK National Final, to be held in Wales from 25th to 28th November 2025.

Following a record-breaking 600+ nominations from across the UK, 24 of the most talented students and apprentices have been selected to compete in the National Final. Each finalist was nominated by either their tutor or employer and will compete in one of four key automotive specialisms: Body Repair, Refinishing, Light Vehicle Technology, and Heavy Vehicle Technology.

After excelling in the regional qualifiers held in Derby in May 2025, Charlie ranked among the top six in the highly competitive Light Vehicle Technology category. His outstanding performance secured his place at the National Final, where he will join other exceptional finalists representing the very best in technical education and skills training.

During the competition, Charlie will be required to demonstrate his expertise across a wide range of automotive tasks, including:

  • Vehicle Inspection

  • Engine Mechanical Systems

  • Braking Systems

  • High Voltage Systems

  • Body Electrical Systems

  • Engine Electrical Diagnostics

In addition to technical competence, participants must also showcase essential soft skills such as problem solving, time management, and the ability to work under pressure - skills that are vital for success in the modern automotive industry.

Sarah Whiteside Jones, Director of Membership Engagement and Public Affairs at the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), said: "This year’s IMI Skills Competitions saw record levels of entries, with exceptionally high standards of scoring in the National Qualifiers.

“With a clear mission to help the automotive sector address the significant skills gaps it faces, we are thrilled that employers, further education colleges, and training centres across the UK took the time to nominate their talented and dedicated apprentices.

“The competitors who progressed through to the National Finals are great ambassadors for the exciting career opportunities that exist across our dynamic sector.”

Neil Corfield, Automotive Lecturer at Lincoln College, said: “It’s brilliant to see a young talent like Charlie excel - he is truly showcasing his skillset on a national stage, representing Newark and Lincoln College. We are absolutely delighted to see him advance to the next stage of WorldSkills; it’s a fantastic and well-deserved achievement.”

The finalists represent all four UK nations, highlighting the depth of emerging talent within the automotive sector. Standards this year were particularly high, with average scores in the Light Vehicle Technology category reaching their highest level since 2020.

Charlie’s success not only reflects his dedication and technical ability but also showcases the outstanding quality of training and support provided by Newark College and Lincoln College Group. As he prepares for the finals, he stands as a shining example of the next generation of automotive professionals.
