Redirecting Careers with Construction Apprenticeships at Lincoln College

Former Property Maintenance Operative Apprentice Caitlin is thriving in her new role at Platform Housing Group.

At Lincoln College, we see first-hand how apprenticeships can transform uncertainty into direction, confidence and long-term career ambition.

When Caitlin Morley first came to us, she was still exploring her future. After completing sixth form and beginning a university course in product design, she realised that path was not quite right for her. A subsequent application to join the police service narrowly missed the mark, leaving her questioning her next steps. It was through discovering a Property Maintenance Operative apprenticeship that everything began to shift.

Although Caitlin initially found it daunting being a woman in the trade and her college attendance was low, she gradually became more confident working in a variety of domestic settings and developed her customer service skills. Caitlin is now passionate about her career and immensely proud of how far she has come.

Caitlin Morley, Apprentice at Lincoln College, said: “I didn’t think it was for me at first, but after one day working with a plumber, I loved it and secured one of the two apprenticeship places. It changed everything. I’m where I’m meant to be.”

Since starting her apprenticeship in October 2024 with Platform Housing Group and Lincoln College, Caitlin has successfully achieved her Property Maintenance Operative qualification and gained key health and safety accreditations.

Caitlin’s confidence and capability have grown significantly, enabling her to progress into an Apprentice Heating Engineer role. She is now involved in boiler installations and works directly with customers, including vulnerable residents, demonstrating professionalism and maturity beyond her years.

Jon Cotton, Curriculum Lead for Construction Apprenticeships at Lincoln College, said: “We are immensely proud of apprentices like Caitlin. Her story reflects what apprenticeships are designed to achieve: meaningful skills development, increased confidence and tangible career progression.

“Caitlin’s journey is a relatable example of how the right opportunity, combined with practical learning and employer support, can unlock real potential.”

A particularly important aspect of Caitlin’s experience has been the supportive environment around her. She has spoken positively about feeling encouraged, respected and trusted within her workplace – something that has been instrumental in building her confidence and ambition.

Caitlin is now planning her next steps. She hopes to complete her Level 3 qualification in plumbing and heating and eventually broaden her expertise in oil-fired heating systems.
