After excelling in the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) Skills Competition, Newark College-based Automotive Apprentice Charlie White has been named among the top 16 competitors in the Light Vehicle Automotive Technology category. Charlie has secured a place at the one-day National Practical Qualifier, taking place between 19–23 May 2025 at the Delphi Technologies Education Centre in Warwickshire – with all expenses covered.
Charlie began his journey on the Level 1 Automotive programme at Lincoln College. His strong performance during a work experience placement with JM Automotive led to an apprenticeship opportunity, where he has since continued his studies at Newark College. He is set to complete his apprenticeship in July 2025.
WorldSkills UK competitions, such as Light Vehicle Automotive Technology, are designed to test and elevate the skills of young people by simulating real-life challenges faced by technicians. Participants tackle a range of rigorous tasks, including diagnostics, system repairs, inspections, and working with advanced technologies such as hybrid and electric vehicles. Competitions are assessed by a panel of industry experts, with criteria focused not only on technical ability but also on planning, time management, problem-solving, and adherence to health and safety standards.
Ben Blackledge, Chief Executive, WorldSkills UK said: “Registering apprentices and learners for WorldSkills UK Competitions is an exciting opportunity to showcase their potential, inspire excellence and equip them with the skills needed to thrive in a competitive workforce. By entering, employers and training organisations are investing in both the individuals and the success of their organisation.”
Neil Corfield, Main Grade Lecturer in Automotive Engineering at the Lincoln College Group, said: “Charlie has shown remarkable growth throughout his apprenticeship. His technical skills have sharpened, and his dedication is second to none. He approaches every challenge with determination and a calm confidence. We’re incredibly proud of how far he’s come and excited to see him take the next step at the WorldSkills UK qualifiers.”
Charlie White, Automotive Apprentice, said: “I’ve always been into cars – I used to help rebuild and restore them with my dad and grandad, so getting into the trade felt natural. When my tutor mentioned the IMI competition, I thought I’d give it a go! It’s a bit crazy being the only one from my course to go through, but I’m excited for the challenge. The theory side at college has been really interesting, and the tutors have been supportive. This competition will be a great knowledge booster. I’m just looking forward to seeing where it leads.”
WorldSkills competitions are career-defining experiences. According to WorldSkills UK, 89% of past competitors say the competition helped them improve their personal and employability skills.
Beyond the national qualifiers, successful finalists will be invited to a Masterclass Training Day in October 2024, where they’ll train on the latest equipment and engage with mentors and peers. The top six scorers across all national qualifier heats will progress to the WorldSkills UK National Final from 25–28 November in Wales, culminating in a prestigious medal ceremony at the ICC.
Top age-eligible performers may even be selected to join Squad UK for EuroSkills and potentially the WorldSkills International Competitions in the future, offering a unique opportunity to represent the nation and continue developing as skilled ambassadors for the industry. Participants from this year’s competitions could be selected by WorldSkills UK to join its training and development programme for WorldSkills Aichi (Japan) 2028.
Students like Charlie are proof that Further Education offers powerful, rewarding pathways. Newark College and Lincoln College provide access to industry-focused training, modern facilities, and opportunities like WorldSkills UK that prepare learners for real-world success.
