Students Take on Krazy Races for the First Time

Lincoln College students were thrilled to take part in the 2025 Krazy Races in collaboration with BBC Radio Lincolnshire.

Lincoln College students were thrilled to take part in the 2025 Krazy Races in collaboration with BBC Radio Lincolnshire, raising money for the LIVES charity, supported by Gridline Racing

The day offered a fantastic learning opportunity for students, following months of preparation – from concept design to construction and adaptations to meet safety regulations.

On Sunday 22nd June, with an early start at 6:30am, staff and students had their vehicles checked in the pit area to ensure the karts were suitable and safe to race later that morning.

After a crew briefing, students positioned their karts at the top of Flaxengate, ready to begin at 11am. Mechanical Engineering students Luke, Olly, and Harry were the first Lincoln College team to race, with their kart decked out in camouflage as they performed to In the Army Now by Status Quo. Automotive students Grace, Neveh, and Harley followed in their overalls with their F1-themed kart, delivering a fun performance to Bob the Builder, Can We Fix It? Yes We Can!.

Each team took part in three races, with the fastest time securing a place in the final. The Automotive team came out on top for Lincoln College, placing 18th with a best time of 16.66 seconds, while the Mechanical Engineering team followed closely in 19th place with a time of 17.43 seconds.

Lincoln College and Siemens Energy apprentice Bradley Norris was part of the overall winning team, clocking an impressive time of 13.39 seconds! Bradley had worked on the kart for over three months with his colleagues and was at the event to support his team at the start line.

Georgia Davey, Lincoln College Mechanical Engineering Lecturer and driver on the day, said: “The students have done an amazing job – it’s a real credit to them. From the initial preparation stages, setting up the brake system and changing tyres, to the performance itself, they’ve shown real dedication and teamwork. It’s a brilliant opportunity for them to apply their mechanical engineering knowledge in a practical, creative context, and it’ll definitely support their studies going forward.”

Grace Harley, a Level 1 Automotive student, said: “I’ve put in over 60 hours to build this kart. It was hard work, but it was worth it – I would absolutely love to do it again next year.”

Our students are already eager to take part again in next year’s event – hopefully as drivers once they’re over 18. Their hard work came to life on the track, and it was a proud moment to see their success unfold, race by race.
