First and second-year Level 3 Technical Theatre Production students are bringing festive magic to life this season as they prepare to showcase their skills, setting the scene at Doddington Hall. The group has been busy planning and building set designs that will be installed at the historic Lincolnshire venue as part of its annual Christmas celebrations.
Over the half-term break, students will spend two full days on-site at Doddington Hall, gaining invaluable hands-on experience in professional set construction and installation. The collaborative project sees local designers transforming the hall’s rooms under an enchanting Fairytales theme, inspired by pantomime and folklore.
The college’s technical theatre students are responsible for creating a forest scene - a woodland walk that gradually transforms into a snowy Christmas dreamland. Their work involves designing infrastructure, crafting props, and preparing the full installation ready for the launch of this much-anticipated festive event, which is expected to attract between 14,000 and 17,000 visitors.
With so many members of the public set to experience their work, students are learning the importance of producing professional-quality results while meeting client expectations. Working to a creative brief and under the guidance of the Doddington Hall team, learners are developing essential technical and teamwork skills that will serve them well in future theatre and production careers.
Heather Martin, a Level 3 Technical Theatre student, said: “I’m really excited to be part of it – it’s a great chance to build my skills in stage layout and lighting design, and to see how everything comes together to create a full production.
"On my course so far, I’ve really enjoyed the hands-on work – setting up stage decking, building props, and learning how to properly spike and bolt the stage. It’s been a great experience seeing how technical theatre works behind the scenes.”
