Do you want a better understanding of mental health, either personally or professionally? This is the perfect course for you.

The demand for mental health skills and resources has been steadily growing throughout the last decade and employees and employers have found the significance of mental health awareness at the forefront of their training agendas.

The Level 1 Award is a short introductory course in mental health awareness and can help raise awareness of mental health and the effects it can have on both individuals and society.

This course can support you to progress onto the Level 2 Certificate in Mental Health Awareness. This course is split into manageable sections. The units covered are:

Section One: What is meant by mental health

  • About the terms ‘mental health’ and ‘mental ill health’

  • Possible causes of mental health problems

  • Examples of mental health problems

  • Common sources of information on mental health issues.

 

Section Two: The social and personal effects of mental ill health

  • The prominence of individuals experiencing mental health problems in the UK

  • The effects that experiencing a mental problem might have on an individual

  • How mental health is reported in the media

  • The negative effects that media reporting can have on an individual and society

  • How stereotyping can affect people with mental health problems.

 

Section Three: The responses to mental health issues

  • The rights of people experiencing mental ill health

  • Possible responses that can be made to support an individual with mental health problems

  • Factors which can have an impact on whether a response will work

  • Where to refer people for further help or guidance about mental health issues

  • Ways to promote positive mental health.

 

Section Four: Cultural diversity in relation to mental health issues

  • The possible causes of mental distress in different cultural groups

  • Examples of barriers that may exist for different cultural groups accessing services

  • Ways of overcoming barriers to accessing services

  • Factors that can help promote positive mental health amongst different cultural groups.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements but this course is ideal if you want to upskill or to pursue a career in the Care Sector.

This course is funded through the College’s Adult Education Budget. You must be 19 or older on the first day and duration of the course and not live in a devolved area.


 

Assessment & Progression

Continued on line assessment throughout the course. You will be expected to complete and submit units on a regular basis.

What You Will Need To Bring

You will ideally need to have access to Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Publisher and PowerPoint as you may need to download and edit documents for your online course.

Course Fees

These courses are currently being subsidised by the college and are, therefore, free of charge at present UNLESS you fail to complete them, in this case you will be liable to pay £150 to cover the cost of materials. We accept that sometimes there are exceptional circumstances where it
simply isn’t possible for you to complete your course. We will work with you to find an appropriate solution to avoid withdrawal wherever possible.
