Do you like practical working? Do you want to work with vehicles or machinery? Maybe you want to be a mechanic or engineer but don’t know where to start. This course is your first step.

In this course, you’ll learn about the maintenance of all kinds of vehicles and machines that are used in the Automotive sector. If you’re aged 16-19, this course has been designed for you to give you the knowledge you need to start out in this area.

This introductory course is ideal for you if you are interested in a job in the motor vehicle maintenance and repair industry. It allows you to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and a successful career.

This is an engaging and motivating starting point is generally aimed at learners 16-19 years old who have a keen interest to learn about maintenance associated with vehicles and machinery used in the automotive sector

This qualification consists of Mandatory units and Vehicle system units:

Group A Mandatory Units:

  • Health and Safety in the Workplace

  • Tools, Equipment and Consumable Materials for Vehicle Maintenance

Group B Vehicle System Units:

  • Engine Operation and Components

  • Lubrication System Components and Maintenance

  • Engine Cooling System Components and Maintenance

  • Spark Ignition System Components and Maintenance

  • Spark Ignition Engine Fuel System Components and Maintenance

  • Compression Ignition Engine Fuel System Components and Maintenance

  • Exhaust System Components and Maintenance

  • Steering System Components and Maintenance

  • Suspension System Components and Maintenance

  • Braking System Components and Maintenance

  • Wheel and Tyre Construction and Maintenance

  • Vehicle Transmission System Components and Maintenance

  • Vehicle Electrical Circuits and Components

Entry requirements

You’ll need your English Language and Maths at GCSE grade two or below or be taking a functional skills English and/or Maths.

Assessment & Progression

Assessment: You’ll be assessed by an online exam and assignments of practical tasks.

Progression: When you have completed this course you could go on to a higher level course or it can be used rather than GCSEs to go into an apprenticeship or get a job.

What You Will Need To Bring

You’ll need workwear and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) from our preferred supplier which is navy blue overalls and steel toe-capped footwear, you will also need a copy of the course textbook: 'Automotive Technician Training: Theory, Levels 1/2/3' ISBN-: 978-0415720380.

You’ll also need general stationery equipment, a set of headphones (as supplied with many mobile phones) for research and revision tasks and access to the internet; PCs are available on campus.
