Do you want to learn the basics of the construction industry? Would you like to work in the building trade but are not sure which trade is right for you? This course could help you.

This course includes practical and theory elements of Carpentry & Joinery, Brickwork, Plumbing, Plastering, and Painting & Decorating, providing you with the underpinning skills and knowledge to progress while studying topics at an appropriate level to begin. This course will also offer you support, preparing you for the construction industry.

Generally, you will have gained a good level of skill and the ability to interpret drawings and apply your developing practical skills.

During the course, you’ll learn:

  • Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction

  • Construction Industry Topics

  • Maintaining and Using a variety of Hand Tools and more

Entry requirements

Overall grade profile of Grade 4 minimum between Maths and English. For example, Grade 1 in English and Grade 3 in Maths will be accepted, or a Grade 2 in both English and Maths.

Satisfactory school reference should be available upon request. 

Assessment & Progression

Assessment: Assessment is a combination of practical tests and written examinations.

Progression: Successful completion of the Level One Certificate could lead to a Level Two Diploma in any of the trades which you’ll need to choose. You will also be able to access potential careers including within the building trade. Completing this course would prepare you well for an apprenticeship.

What You Will Need To Bring

You’ll need workwear and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) from our preferred supplier. Additionally, you’ll need general stationery equipment and access to the internet; PCs are available on campus.
