The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training develops practical teaching/training skills and prepares teachers and trainers to work in a wide range of contexts in the post-16 sector.

This qualification is suitable for you if you want to develop your knowledge and skills in teaching and training with a specific focus on practical teaching/delivery, whether you are currently teaching and/or training and want to have your experience and practice accredited with a recognised qualification or are not currently in a teaching or training role but have the desire to and can meet the minimum teaching practice requirements of 30 hours (evidence of teaching practice must be provided at interview).

This course normally runs for three hours per week for a full academic year (September to June). Lessons will take place in the daytime.

During this course, you will complete six units:

  • Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training

  • Planning to meet the needs of learners in education and training

  • Delivering inclusive education and training

  • Assessing learners in education and training

  • Using resources for education and training

  • Principles and practices of IQA with enhancing internal quality assurance

Entry requirements

Applicants are to be qualified/experienced in the subject they intend to teach.

Applicants must have a minimum of 30 hours of teaching / training practice; this may be as
part of a teaching training role or may be through voluntary teaching/training.

Evidence of at least 30 hours confirmed teaching practice over the duration of the programme from your employer or the organisation you are volunteering within must be provided at interview.

Confirmation from your employer or other organisation that you have skills equivalent to a Level 3 qualification or above, or copies of certificates of qualifications at  Level 3 or above.

A copy of a Disclosure (DBS), valid for the organisation in which you are teaching/training.

Assessment & Progression

This qualification is predominantly assessed through a digital portfolio of evidence demonstrating your construction of knowledge and practical ability to plan, deliver and reflect on teaching and training and assignment work

In addition, you will also be observed delivering lessons at least three times by a tutor from the teacher training team. These observations are supportive and provide you with an opportunity to experiment with new strategies and then engage in a developmental conversation afterwards to support continued improvement in practice.

You will need general stationery items and access to the internet, PCs are available on campus.
