Violin - Carving the Scroll and Setting In

The International Foundation and Fundamentals of Violin Making programme has been developed to provide accessible, intensive training opportunities for international students wishing to study within the six-month visitor visa period currently available for study in the United Kingdom.

The programmes are designed for complete beginners, developing makers, musicians, woodworkers, and craftspeople seeking a structured introduction to the principles and practices of violin making.

Each course focuses upon a specific area of instrument construction, allowing students to gain meaningful practical experience whilst developing the foundation knowledge required for future study.

All practical work is based upon recognised models of instruments by Antonio Stradivari, providing students with an introduction to the proportions, geometry, craftsmanship, and working methods that continue to influence modern violin making.

This programme focuses on the development of the essential hand skills required for violin making through the study and carving of a classical violin scroll.

The scroll is widely recognised as one of the most technically demanding and artistically expressive elements of the violin. Through its construction, students are introduced to many of the core skills that underpin successful instrument making.

Using a recognised Stradivari model as the basis for study, students will develop an understanding of:
