Violin - Rib Structure, Making the Plates (Front and Back)

The International Foundation and Fundamentals of Violin Making programme been developed to provide accessible, intensive training opportunities for international students wishing to study within the six-month visitor visa period currently available for study in the United Kingdom.

The programmes are designed for complete beginners, developing makers, musicians, woodworkers, and craftspeople seeking a structured introduction to the principles and practices of violin making.

Each ourse focuses upon a specific area of instrument construction, allowing students to gain meaningful practical experience whilst developing the foundation knowledge required for future study.

All practical work is based upon recognised models of instruments by Antonio Stradivari, providing students with an introduction to the proportions, geometry, craftsmanship, and working methods that continue to influence modern violin making.

This programme introduces students to the fundamental construction methods used in classical violin making through the creation of a complete rib structure and finished front plate, including bass bar fitting.

The course provides a comprehensive introduction to many of the core skills required in violin making and offers students an opportunity to experience the working methods that underpin the construction of a classical Cremonese instrument.

Working from a recognised Stradivari model, students will develop an understanding of:

• Rib preparation and bending

• Rib assembly

• Corner and end block shaping

• Outline development

• Front plate preparation

• Arching concepts

• Purfling inlay

• Graduating techniques

• Bass bar fitting

• Tool control and workshop practice

• Measurement and accuracy

Throughout the programme, students will gain experience in the use of traditional hand tools and develop an appreciation for the precision and craftsmanship required in professionl violin making.
