Three talented students from Lincoln College are taking confident steps into the world of professional hair and beauty, thanks to an exciting opportunity with respected local salon owner Dan Taylor.
Recognising their skill, dedication and potential, Dan has welcomed the trio into his business on part-time contracts designed to fit around their studies. A passionate advocate for nurturing new talent within the industry, he offered each student a trial shift to demonstrate their abilities. Impressed by their professionalism and technical skills, he invited them to join him on regular shifts – giving them invaluable hands-on experience in a busy salon environment.
Cheryl Webster, Curriculum Lead for Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy at Lincoln College Group, said: “This is a fantastic success story for our Beauty Therapy and Hairdressing programmes. We are extremely grateful to Dan for offering our students employment opportunities and for delivering a specialist colour course within his salon as part of their work experience. His ongoing support provides invaluable industry insight, helping our learners build confidence, strengthen their skills and prepare for successful careers.”
Jessica Matthews began her journey at Lincoln College on the Level 2 Hair Apprenticeship before progressing to the Level 3 Hairdressing programme. Following a successful trial, she secured a 12-hour contract working Fridays and Saturdays. Jessica predominantly specialises in blonding services, while also gaining insight into stock management, the business side of the salon, and client care on the shop floor.
Jessica Matthews, Level 3 Hairdressing student, said: “At college, I’ve perfected hair-up and been able to go into the creative side. It broadens your horizons with a lot of things – it covers much more colour theory and cutting.
“I’m very grateful to Dan. It’s hard to find employment as a hairdresser; a lot of places are self-employed, so to find someone willing to take me on is great.”
Jessica is joined by Jemma Turner, a Level 2 Hairdressing student, who has also secured a stylist position to complement her studies. Meanwhile, Alice Hall’s journey demonstrates the clear progression routes available at the College. Beginning on Level 1 Beauty Therapy, she advanced through Level 2 and is now in her final year of Level 3. This paid industry experience will further elevate her skills and confidence as she prepares to enter the sector full-time.
These opportunities highlight how Lincoln College’s practical, industry-focused courses are preparing students to be work-ready from day one. By combining technical training, creative development and real-world salon experience, students are not only gaining qualifications but also building the confidence, commercial awareness and professional standards employers are seeking.
