This week engaged Year 10s from Gainsborough Academy visited Lincoln College for the Futures Programme by the NHS to uncover various aspects of everyday health and introduce them to the Health & Social Care sector.
To inspire younger generations, school pupils were engaged with exciting activities across the week to give them the skills and knowledge.
In partnership with Lincoln College, the Lincolnshire Training Hub Primary Care Education programme were hosted at the college using the facilities to showcase diagnosis, do practical work and listen to guest talks.
Ruth Pollock, Operations and Liaison Manager and Staff Health and Wellbeing Champion, said: “We engage with students from quite a young age and ask them to consider whether they could work in health care in the future.
“They'll get a hands-on interactive experience of working in the health care sector, so we have got some interactive activities planned.
“We think that it’s important because if you are applying for a college course or a university course, or job in the health care sector, it is highly likely that you will be asked for the skills that we're teaching today, which will serve students well in future.”
Students got an insight into Dermatology testing with the Training Hub’s Dr Laura Siauciuniene, who demonstrated with a UV Woods Lamp to diagnose bacterial and fungal infections as well as Autoimmune conditions with hands-on activities to highlight the realism of conditions.
Other activities involved the human skeleton where students were required to identify the bone structure and ordering. They also underpinned healthy eating and how to meal plan a balanced diet considering sugar intake and conditions like diabetes.
During the week, students were also exposed to life saving information on how to detect cancer early to treat as soon as possible with screening programmes to identify cancers such as Breast Cancer and Cervical Screenings. They also covered other informative topics about STIs as well as HPV and Flu vaccinations.
Overall, aspirations have been raised during this exciting programme with school pupils. Lincoln College were delighted to host the sessions for the first time to inspire young minds to consider careers in the Health & Social Care sector.
