From the Forces to Further Education
While it doesn’t happen often, sometimes in life we are all faced with crossroads when it comes to our careers.
Lincoln College Lecturer in Policing and Protective Services, Kevin Morley was at such a crossroads recently.
Having left the RAF in November 2024 as an Air & Space Operations Manager after 36 years, he originally applied for and was interviewed for an Aviation Lecturer position at the Air & Space Institute, Newark.
Being unsuccessful, but receiving strong feedback on his application, Kevin kept his ear to the ground and shortly afterwards heard an advertisement on the radio for a recruitment event that the College was holding.
Kevin explains: “I heard the ad that listed several occupations that the College was interested in, one being aviation. I subsequently attended the recruitment event held at The Drill where I was able to speak to the appropriate teams to see what options were available.
“Stuart Reddington, the Assistant Principal, asked me what areas I was interested in, and in addition to aviation I mentioned uniformed services, as my skills were transferable. I was then offered a temporary contract through FE Resources.”
Kevin continues: “A full-time position then came up and I was encouraged by the Policing Team to apply. I then undertook the interview process alongside other applicants and was offered a permanent role.”
FE Resources is the College’s onsite recruitment agency for temporary roles and the College is also part of the Armed Forces Covenant, which is a pledge by the nation to ensure fair treatment for those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families.
This is a commitment to acknowledge and understand the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces community.
Sarah Hughes, Recruitment & Resourcing Officer in People Services, said: “Kevin is a perfect example of someone who has come to us with decades of experience who we’ve been able to recognise as having tons of potential for a role at the College and has been given the chance to excel here after taking the chance with us through FE Resources.
“The service exists not only to give people the chance to work flexibly and to get a taste of working in Further Education, but also a gateway to a whole new career as Kevin proves.”
Kevin now covers Level 2 and 3 in Policing and Protective Services on a permanent basis.
Look out for future events where you can explore recruitment opportunities with the College and start your own FE journey.
