The Fundamentals of Piano Tuning and Repair Foundation programme has been designed for students who wish to pursue a career in piano tuning and repair.

This one-year, full-cost, Foundation course can provide students with the opportunity to develop the underpinning skills and knowledge to progress.

Students are introduced to the basic elements of tuning an upright piano and explore the skills and techniques and working practices required to restore pianos. Content includes:

Tuning:

  • Scale

  • Unisons

  • Tune one octave up and one octave down

  • Tune the whole piano (upright)

Workshop Practice:

  • Piano construction

  • Tools and materials used in repairs

  • Soundboard repairs

  • Replace steel strings

  • Take bass string rubbing

  • Action and key servicing/repairs

  • Pedal mechanism servicing/repairs

Health and Safety:

  • Workshop safety including safe use of hand tools

Entry requirements

Our courses are designed as a progressive pathway, with flexible entry points for different experience levels. Completing the full sequence within a discipline provides complete training from beginner to industry-ready standard.

Please note, these courses are for adults 18+.

 

Study Details

Each learner will have three days of contact time with specialist tutors, plus access to the tuning booths and workshops for a two hour unsupervised session per week during one academic year starting in September.

Assessment & Progression

Tuning:

Series of tests throughout the year  – results recorded by tutor and added to student portfolio.

Workshop practice:

Series of practical tasks based on course content, recorded by students and presented as portfolio at the end of the year.

Health and Safety:

Tutor observation during workshop ‘signed-off’ if satisfactorily completed.

Progression:

Following the Fundamentals Piano Tuning and Repair course, student may wish to apply for the Advanced Piano Tuning and Repair.

This is a full cost course, £4,000.
