Lucy Lupton, a BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching, Education & Development (Top-Up) student, has successfully completed a six-week community project that brought movement, music, and festive cheer to older adults at Neale Court in Hykeham.
As part of her Sports Development in the Community module, Lucy was required to explore government policy around the importance of physical activity and apply strategic planning to support a specific target group.
Choosing to focus on older adults, she contacted several local care homes with an offer to deliver a bespoke programme of seated tap-dancing sessions - an accessible, engaging form of exercise designed to promote mobility, confidence, and enjoyment.
Neale Court responded with enthusiasm, and over six weeks Lucy led residents through a progressive programme tailored to their needs. This week she delivered her final session, complete with festive Christmas-themed tap routines, bringing the project to a lively and heartwarming close.
Sports Coaching, Education & Development tutor, Gemma Bell, attended the final session and shared glowing feedback:
“I was invited to attend, and I was incredibly impressed. Neale Court has shared several posts on social media highlighting Lucy’s sessions, and it was clear to see the rapport she has built with residents. Many reminisced about their own dancing experiences, creating a warm, engaging atmosphere.
“As a qualified dance teacher, Lucy has skillfully adapted her practice to suit the needs of the residents, making a meaningful and positive impact on their physical activity, enjoyment, and connection.”
Lucy’s project stands out as a strong example of how students can use their academic learning and professional skills to create meaningful community impact. By combining her dance background with a strategic understanding of sports development, she has delivered a programme that was not only physically beneficial but also emotionally enriching for participants.
The photos shared by Neale Court on social media captures the joy and engagement of the final festive session - testament to the success of the project.
