The HND Civil Engineering is available as a two-year part-time Level 5 programme designed for students who have experience of, or work in, the civil engineering industry and have ambitions of working in this area from a professional, managerial, or technical capacity.

The course builds on the knowledge and skills studied in the HNC and covers subjects such as: Principles of Structural Design, Civil Engineering Technology, mathematics for construction, structural design, and project. 

This course is designed to complement a student's ability to find solutions to engineering problems using developed technology and apply skills to a broad range of industrial areas, such as design, development, manufacturing, testing, maintenance and operation of electrical or electronic equipment. 

Students have the opportunity to gain contemporary vocational skills including study, research, analysis, planning and organisational skills, as well as the responsibility for their own learning, ability to be flexible and to work co-operatively with others.

The course is part of Lincolnshire Institute of Technology (IoT). The IoT specialises in delivering high quality technical education across industries with a focus on Health Sciences, Engineering, Digital, Automotive, Manufacturing, and Construction subjects, opening up opportunities for students to gain industry-relevant skills to overcome some of the key challenges facing these industries.

Entry requirements

Applicants are required to have:

  • HNC in Civil Engineering

Plus

  • GCSE English – Grade C/4 or above

  • GCSE Maths – Grade C/4 or above

EU and International Applicants

  • IELTS with an overall score of 6.0 and a minimum of 5.5 in each component. There are several Secure English Language Test (SELT) providers approved by the UK Visa and Immigration Service. More information about this can be found on the Gov. website here.

Study Details

Students will study on the Lincoln College Campus for the full durations of the course. Part-time, two years. One day per week.

Course contact hours are typically comprised of: six hours theory sessions per week, one-two hours practical/seminar sessions per week. It is expected that students complete between one and six hours of additional independent study per week in order to be successful on this programme.

Whilst the sessions delivered at College are typically six hours between a time frame of 9am – 7.30pm, Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, it is expected that students make themselves available to complete part-time sector specific work or work experience hours outside of these times. Many of the opportunities offered through the college will require commitment during evenings and weekends.

Progression

HND qualifications are widely recognised in their own right and provide students with the skills required for employment in a range of associated professions. On successful completion of the course students may top up to degree level at another higher education institution.

Terms & Conditions

This course is validated by Pearson. The validating institution is responsible for awarding the qualification at the end of the programme. Students on validated courses are OfS registered, funded and taught at Lincoln College and it is the responsibility of the College to manage all aspects of this provision. The validating institution maintains an oversight of the programme throughout the academic year and must be satisfied that students are being taught in line with the required academic standards of the awarding institution.
