Career Degrees at Lincoln College University Centre offer a different way to study at a higher level, combining academic learning with a more supportive and practical environment than a traditional university campus.
Understanding these benefits may help you decide which option is right for you and your future goals.
Why study at Lincoln College University Centre?
Degrees studied on a college campus are the exact same qualification as those studied at a traditional university – the only difference is that courses are delivered in a college-based setting, often through a dedicated ‘university centre’. These courses are validated by university partners.
A validated degree course is a higher education programme developed and taught by one institution (often a further education college - like ours) but approved and awarded by another, typically a university with Degree Awarding Powers. This process ensures the course meets the same high academic standards, quality requirements, and learning outcomes as those directly managed by the university.
Our current validating partners include the University of Hull, University of Derby, The Open University and Lincoln Bishop University (formerly Bishop Grosseteste University until September 2025).
So, at Lincoln College University Centre, students can get the best of both worlds - study a validated university-level course whilst benefiting from the structure and support associated with smaller sized groups, a supportive environment and tailor-made facilities at College.
What are the benefits of studying at Lincoln College University Centre?
One of the biggest benefits is the learning environment.
Lincoln College University Centre's Career Degrees offer smaller class sizes, meaning students can receive more one-to-one support from tutors. Teaching staff also bring strong industry experience and are closely involved in students’ progress.
The support students receive is also more structured, with regular contact time and clearer guidance. For many students, particularly those who prefer a more personal approach, this can make the transition into higher education feel more manageable.
Our Career Degrees also place a strong emphasis on practical learning with courses designed to reflect industry needs and real working environments.
This means students don’t just learn theory - they learn how to apply it. For many careers, this hands-on experience is what employers are looking for.
Cost, accessibility and location:
Another major benefit is that our courses can sometimes be more affordable than traditional university courses.
Lower tuition fees for courses such as Higher National Certificates/Diplomas can reduce overall student debt and make higher education more accessible.
Most students won’t have to pay for tuition fees up front if they apply for a Tuition Fee Loan through Student Finance England.
Studying at Lincoln College can also reduce living costs with many students choosing to live at home while studying - avoiding the expense of university accommodation and relocation.
Our courses are also condensed, meaning students are often on campus only two days a week, enabling them to work part-time, look after family commitments or have a better study-life balance.
Prestige and employability:
A common myth is that traditional universities are considered more prestigious or lead to better job prospects.
In reality, employers increasingly value skills, experience and attitude over specifically which campus a qualification was studied at. And remember, the award is validated by our university partner which means students leave with the qualification from that university.
At Lincoln College University Centre, our Career Degrees have a strong focus on employability, practical experience and industry-relevant learning.
But don’t just take our word for it – we’ve also been awarded a TEF Silver rating, recognising the quality of our higher education provision.
A panel of Higher Education experts recognised us for our “teaching, assessment and feedback”, the “research, innovation, scholarship, professional practice and employer engagement” as well as the “staff professional development and academic practice”, “learning environment and academic support”, “learning resources” and “student engagement”.
What matters most is choosing a course and environment where you feel you can truly succeed.
Support beyond the classroom:
Student support is a key strength and one we're particularly proud of. At Lincoln College University Centre, students benefit from academic guidance, wellbeing support and career advice throughout their studies.
Smaller learning communities allow tutors to identify issues early and provide targeted support, helping students stay on track and achieve their goals.
Our dedicated Academic Skills Development Advisor is able to help students access extra support with their academic writing, including:
Understanding and planning assignments
Assignment structure and paragraph structure
Academic argument and critical thinking
Introductions and conclusions
Strategies for editing and proof-reading
Our HE Success Coordinator helps support students through challenging times and can also help with managing their studies and wider life commitments.
We offer a student-centred service, offering the kind of support students need to reach their potential and succeed on their course, including coaching and counselling.
Progression and next steps:
Career Degrees at Lincoln College University Centre are designed with progression in mind.
For some students, this means moving directly into employment after graduating, supported by the practical skills and experience developed during their course. For others, it may mean progressing into further study, including postgraduate qualifications or professional training.
Many students choose us as a stepping stone - particularly if they want to build confidence, develop independence or gain a clearer sense of their career direction before taking their next step.
Recent graduate Chloe Paddison is a great example of this. She said:
"The BSc (Hons) Applied Animal Management degree has opened a range of doors for me within the animal industry.
"With no prior experience or qualification within the animal field, this degree was perfect for nurturing me through the basics to the more diverse and detailed areas in animal management.
"Through the superb support of the college tutors, along with hard work and determination, I was awarded a first-class honours.
"I am currently living my dream as a zookeeper, working with a range of species including primates, psittacines, and big cats."
